The Toronto Raptors have signed 7-foot-5 center Jamarion Sharp to a training camp contract, adding significant size and defensive pedigree to their preseason roster. Sharp, the reigning G League Defensive Player of the Year, was claimed off waivers from the LA Clippers earlier this week. The move comes as the Raptors look to finalize their roster following a 129-125 preseason loss to the Detroit Pistons on October 16.
Jamarion Sharp is a massive 7-foot-5 center who earned G League Defensive Player of the Year honors last season. His shot-blocking and rim protection at that level were elite. Translating that defensive impact to the NBA is a challenge for any player, especially one adjusting to the league's faster pace. The Clippers waived him after a roster crunch, making him available for Toronto to take a low-risk chance. Sharp made a brief two-minute appearance in his Raptors preseason debut against the New York Knicks on October 15.
Toronto's frontcourt depth has been tested at times, and adding a player of Sharp's physical profile provides an intriguing insurance option. This is a classic training camp flyer. The Raptors can evaluate him closely and likely intend to develop him with their G League affiliate, Raptors 905, as a stash option. If injuries hit the NBA roster, having a ready 7-foot-5 defender in the system could be valuable. It shows the front office is actively working to improve organizational depth right up to the regular season.
The Raptors' offseason was dominated by the return of 2019 Finals MVP Kawhi Leonard. Sharp's role is far more developmental. He is not expected to challenge for major rotation minutes immediately. Instead, he represents a long-term project and a specialized tool. In a limited role, his sheer height could disrupt shots in specific defensive schemes. His signing does not change the core rotation but gives head coach Darko Rajakovic another big body for practice and potential matchup use.
Preseason action continues as the team prepares for the regular season. Their next test is a home game against the Chicago Bulls on October 21. The Raptors' preseason has been a mixed bag, with results including a 148-98 win over New York on October 13 and a 114-106 victory against the Clippers on October 10. Sharp will have a few more chances to make an impression in practice and possibly in limited game action. The final roster decisions are looming, and his path likely leads to the G League, keeping him within the organization as a depth piece for the marathon NBA season.
