Toronto Raptors Sign Malachi Smith to Training Camp Deal
The Toronto Raptors have bolstered their roster with the signing of guard Malachi Smith to a non-guaranteed Exhibit 10 training camp contract. This move comes through the work of his agent, Michael Lelchitski of SIG Sports.
What happened?
Malachi Smith, a 6-4 guard from Gonzaga, averaged 8.3 points on a shooting split of 48.5 percent from the field, 43.5 percent on three-pointers, and 100.0 percent at the free-throw line across 15 games with the Brooklyn Nets to close out the 2025-26 season. He was waived back on July 10 after the organization exercised his minimum salary team option on June 30, in order to make salary cap space.
Why it matters for Toronto Raptors
Toronto currently has 17 players on the payroll, including Smith's $2,185,116 that he's owed next season. The team doesn't have any of its three two-way spots available. However, once the trade of forward Brandon Ingram and guard Gradey Dick for Los Angeles Clippers forward Kawhi Leonard goes through, one roster spot will open up for the Raptors.
What comes next?
The 26-year-old Smith will be fighting mostly with Oregon Ducks center Nate Bittle, who went undrafted in 2026, for minutes throughout the preseason. If he were to get cut, Smith should have the option to join the Raptors 905, Toronto's NBA G League affiliate. The Toronto Raptors are currently on a recent form of 2W-0D-3L (LLWWL, most recent first), having lost their last two games, including a 114-102 loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers on May 3, 2026.
