The Toronto Raptors are again linked with a major move for three-time All-Star center Domantas Sabonis, with a proposed three-team deal involving the Los Angeles Clippers gaining traction.
Toronto has shown consistent interest in Sabonis, holding serious talks with Sacramento before the February trade deadline. Those discussions fell apart because the Kings refused to take on Jakob Poeltl's contract, which has three years and about $84 million left. A new framework involving the Clippers could solve that financial obstacle.
Sabonis would fundamentally change Toronto's offensive identity. He averaged 15.8 points and 11.4 rebounds last season, operating as an elite organizer from the center position. His ability to initiate from the elbows, run dribble handoffs, and set punishing screens would create easier shots for Kawhi Leonard and Scottie Barnes.
The reported proposal sends Sabonis to Toronto. The Raptors would give up RJ Barrett, Jakob Poeltl, and rookie Ja'Kobe Walter. Sacramento gets Barrett, Max Strus, and Walter. The Clippers receive Poeltl and a 2029 second-round pick from Toronto.
The math works for all sides. Toronto sends out roughly $52.93 million for Sabonis's $45.47 million salary, creating nearly $7.5 million in room under the first apron. Sacramento moves Sabonis's big number and gets back about $50.09 million in salaries, with Strus on an expiring deal offering more flexibility than Poeltl's long-term pact.
Adding Sabonis addresses a clear need for an offensive hub. Leonard and Barnes would spend less time forcing tough possessions. Immanuel Quickley would benefit from one of the league's best screeners. The trade also lets Toronto keep young frontcourt players like Collin Murray-Boyles and Allen Graves, who fit naturally around Sabonis, Leonard, and Barnes.
A player of Sabonis's caliber could help stabilize performances.
Los Angeles has its own reasons to help the deal. Following Ivica Zubac's departure, they need a proven starting center. Brook Lopez is 38 and in the final year of his deal. Poeltl offers a younger interior anchor under team control through 2030.
The Clippers also lost five future first-round picks due to NBA punishment, so adding any draft capital is helpful. Swapping Strus's $16.66 million for Poeltl's $19.5 million fits within the matching rules for a team below the first apron. The second-round pick from Toronto compensates them for taking on Poeltl's contract.
For the Raptors, this is about seizing a window. Pairing Sabonis's unique playmaking with the scoring of Leonard and Barnes could create a potent playoff offense. While the deal remains speculative, it highlights Toronto's aggressive approach to building a contender after their recent postseason battles with Cleveland.
